Washington Heights has been showing plenty of speed over further and he is fancied to spring a surprise back down to the minimum trip in the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes (3.35) at York today.
He has run well on all three visits to the Knavesmire, most recently when beaten less than half-a-length in fourth behind subsequent July Cup winner Mill Stream in the Duke of York Stakes in May. The way that he travelled through that six-furlong race was impressive and he looked sure to win when quickening clear in the final quarter-mile only to be worn down close home. He has been given a break since a below-par run at Royal Ascot and, back at a track that suits, he looks great value at the 20-1 generally on offer.
The Strikin Viking makes plenty of appeal in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes (3.00). He has been a little unlucky not to win on his past two starts and can gain a deserved success here. With rain forecast overnight, ground conditions could turn in favour of Tashkhan, who can spring a surprise in the group two Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup (2.25). He has twice made the frame at the highest level in the mud and goes well at this track.
